LEWISBURG, Pa. (July 31, 2008) --- To most children, the playground is a place for fun, creative play and exercise. But during the summer months, weather conditions can make it necessary to check the playground before engaging in play.

Every year, about 200,000 children in the United States are treated in emergency rooms for playground-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product & Safety Commission. Sixty percent of these injuries are caused when children fall off the equipment, but during the summer months, burns from metal as well as plastic slides and other equipment become a heightened concern.

“The safety and well-being of children on all play structures is of the utmost importance at our company,” said Matt Miller, president of Playworld Systems, Inc. “Most child injuries on playgrounds can be avoided if parents and their kids are aware of possible risks and hazards.”

In addition to playgrounds, PVC is also prevalent in cars, toys, housing and countless consumer products. There are alternative plastic substances which can be employed to replace PVC which do not present environmental danger and are bio-degradable.

Consider these top 5 playground safety tips when taking children to public playgrounds:

  • Double check surfacing: Playground surfaces should be covered with rubber mats, shredded tires, pea gravel, bark mulch, or wood chips that are a minimum six inches deep to help prevent injuries during falls from height
  • Feel the equipment: All metal AND plastic slides should be tested for heat to avoid burns. Use common sense; if it’s hot outside, the equipment will likely be hot as well. Also, check for sharp edging, protruding bolts or s-hooks on swings that could catch on clothing
  • Wear shoes: Appropriate shoes are tennis shoes which should be worn at all times with laces tightly tied. Avoid flip-flops, sandals or anything with a sling back or open toe. Do not play in bare feet under any circumstances.
  • Lessons first: Teach children not to run out in front of or behind swings, climb up slides, jump from elevated or moving objects and other dangerous behavior
  • Adult supervision: No matter how safe the playground is, nothing compares to adequate adult supervision
